Maya exhibition [re]design + interpretive writing + identity
Spanning over 1,000 square metres, the touring exhibition ‘Maya: The Great Jaguar Rises’ tells stories of everyday life, beliefs, royalty and conflicts. Visitors encounter spectacular Maya treasures, awe-inspiring architecture and astonishing cultural accomplishments in unique immersive exhibition spaces.
The exhibition (originally designed for the MARQ Alicante, Spain, by ROCAMORA Diseño & Arquitectura) underwent a significant transformation for its North American debut. Working in close collaboration with curator Nikolai Grube, I rewrote all texts and redesigned all graphics, prioritizing intuitive, engaging design for audiences at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, Canada, and subsequent U.S. venues.
To create an accessible, multi-sensory experience, braille typography, new infographics, maps and tactile elements were integrated alongside interactive games, ensuring the exhibition narrative is inclusive to all. The new exhibition graphics provide a seamless visual narrative across the diverse thematic areas. The visual design acts as a sophisticated bridge between the modern and the ancient. With a bold logotype and vibrant colors, this cohesive system captures the essence of the Maya people through structured, energetic design.
